Eleven people died as Hurricane Sandy pummeled Cuba on Thursday, state media reported.
Nine deaths occurred in Santiago de Cuba province and two bodies were recovered in Guantanamo state, national media reported, citing civil defense authorities.
Cuban President Raul Castro will travel today to Santiago de Cuba, the country's second largest city, to survey the damage.
More than 3,000 buildings were damaged in eastern Cuba, state television reported.
Hurricane Watch and Warnings have been discontinued for the Republic of Cuba.

It will be mostly cloudy in much of the country, with some showers and rains, particularly strong in central and eastern areas. Those precipitations are remnants of recent hit of hurricane Sandy, which affected Cuba yesterday. Although hurricane's strong winds are all but gone, the wet weather and overcast sky remained a bit longer.
Nevertheless, it will be warm with maximum temperature between 26-29 C (79-84 F), possible warmer in the east of the country. At night, the temperature will fall down to 23-26 C (73-79 F).
The winds will be moderately weak, never exceeding the speed of 40KmPH (25 MPH).
There will be some rough sea around the north coast as well as in the strip from Punta de Maisi to Cabo Cruz. In the rest of coastal regions the sea will be predominantly calm.

2012-10-25 18.00 GMT - HURRICANE SANDY UPDATE
Hurricane Sandy is moving away from Cuba to the Bahamas, after lashing the island with winds and rain. No casualties have been reported so far, although some extensive damage is done, especially in Santiago de Cuba province where it left a trail of partially and fully destroyed houses in several neighborhoods of the eastern city.
The storm’s strong winds and associated heavy rains left several houses roofless, uprooted trees and knocked down electrical poles in the Rajayoga barrio, where its population is now working to repair the damages.
Most of Santiago de Cuba city lacks power at this moment and is cut off from the rest of the country.
Hurricane Sandy hit the city at midnight with sustained winds of over 175 kilometers per hour (115 mph) and left scars that will take all the population’s efforts to heal.
Strong coastal flooding will remain on the south-east coast of Guantanamo and in the north coast from Holguin to Villa Clara.
While some strong winds and intense rain on the edges of the storm will still be present throughout Cuba, and particularly over the Eastern Cuba, the weather is expected to clear and return back to normal in the next 24-48 hours.

Sandy left into the sea at 06:00 in the vicinity of cabo Lucrecia, in Holguin province (760 km east of Havana), after moving for almost five hours over Cuba, said on television meteorologist Jose Rubiera, head of the INSMET forecasts.
Cuban authorities have not reported major damage or victims by the passage of Sandy, that was moving with maximum sustained winds of 165 kmph (category 2 hurricane) and moves at about 30 KmPH, according to the INSMET.
Strong floods and rainfall throughout Eastern Cuba are the predominant elements in Thursday's forecasts for Hurricane Isaac, which increased its strength after leaving Cuban territory. Rains persist in most of the country, but they will be stronger and more intense from Camagüey to Guantánamo, in the east, according to the Institute of Meteorology (INSMET).

Sandy Hurricane is moving toward the north at 20 KmPH approaching to the south coast of Santiago de Cuba in the vicinity of Chivirico in Guama municipality. Sandy has intensified overnight and now has maximum sustained winds of 150 KmPH, with higher gusts. The output of Cuban territory is estimated to occur in the vicinity of Gibara, Holguin, about 7 am (local time) Thursday.
We can expect heavy rains from Sancti Spiritus to Guantanamo and they will persist through Thursday. Hurricane force winds will hit areas of the Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Holguin provinces.
Coastal flooding are strong in the south coast from Granma to Guantanamo and with the exit to the sea on Thursday morning, they will begin on the north coast from Holguin to Villa Clara.

At 6 p.m. local time, the center of Hurricane Sandy was located near latitude 18.5 degrees north and longitude 76.6 degrees west or about 185 Km south-southwest of Santiago de Cuba city.
Hurricane Sandy is moving toward the north near 22 KmPH (14 MPH) and this general motion is expected to continue through Friday, with a slight increase in forward speed later today or tonight. On the forecast track the centre of Sandy is expected to move over portions of Eastern Cuba overnight.
Maximum sustained winds have remains near 130 KmPH (80 MPH) with higher gusts. The rains will increase gradually in the eastern provinces, becoming heavy and intense this evening.
During the next 12-24 hours, there will be tidal waves with danger for navigation and swimming in the Eastern coasts causing coastal flooding in low-lying areas of Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo provinces.

Tropical Storm Sandy became a hurricane Wednesday as it closed in on Jamaica, bringing strong winds and bouts of rain to the island.
By 11 a.m. ET, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, making it a Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was moving north-northeast at about 13 mph.
The storm's center is expected to make landfall on Jamaica sometime Wednesday afternoon.
The forecast map shows Sandy reaching eastern Cuba by early Thursday before heading to the Bahamas.

Tropical storm Sandy is gaining intensity and could reached Cuba as a Hurricane category 1 in evening hours. Sandy was located at 410 Km Southwest of Santiago de Cuba moving northwards at 22 KmPH. Sandy maintains maximum sustained winds of 110 KmPH winds and higher gusts.
The forecast center with the Meteorology Institute warns the population in eastern Cuba about the strong and intense rains and strong winds that could affect half of the eastern part of the island.
Sandy is could make landfall in a point between the eastern Cuban provinces of Granma and Guantanamo tonight, said the Institute.
The forecast center also alert of strong and intense rains from central Sancti Spiritus province all the way east up to Guantanamo. Strong tropical storm and hurricane winds will be produced along with surge on the southern Cuban coasts.

Tropical Storm Sandy is likely to hit western Cuba as a hurricane late Wednesday or early Thursday, according to the Meteorology Institute (Insmet).
The storm was located at 15:00 GMT near latitude 14.8 North, longitude 77.5 West, and is moving toward the North-Northeast at 13 KmPH (8 MPH), likely to gain organization and intensity, said Dr. Jose Rubiera, Director of the Weather Forecast Center of Insmet.
Tropical Storm Sandy is likely to become a hurricane before hitting Jamaica because of the high temperatures in the Caribbean and the conditions in the upper atmosphere.
Rains coming with this tropical system are already affecting eastern Cuba and are expected to gain intensity as the hurricane gets closer.
The Weather Forecast Center will keep a close watch on Tropical Storm Sandy because of likely heavy rain it may cause in eastern Cuba in the next few days.

The weather is hot and sunny all year round. April and May though are especially good. Then you have the most sunny days, low rainfall, low humidity, hot, but not too hot and no hurricanes. In addition, and rather perversely, generally this time, except the Easter week, is low season. So, you should see that flights, hotels, package holidays and car rentals are at the lowest rates but with relatively high availability. Please note some Hotels and Car models are popular all year so bookings are advisable as far in advance as possible.
